Gros-Morne and Les Pendus. Maurepas received by Leclerc with distinction.

As Toussaint was still fighting the French relentlessly, Leclerc, to draw his partisans into defection, received General Maurepas at Le Gros-Morne with distinction, confirmed him in his rank of general of brigade, and entrusted him with the command of Port-de-Paix. Debelle came to Le Gros-Morne with two battalions of the 9th colonial. From there he sent one of them on to Plaisance, where General Desfourneaux was to go. He himself left for Les Gonaïves with the 3rd battalion of the same corps, commanded by Colonel Bodin. Leclerc moved his headquarters to Les Gonaïves. He addressed congratulations to the whole expeditionary army, and in particular to the 5th, 11th and 19th light and the 31st and 68th of the line. He named to the minister of war, as having conducted themselves well, the chef de brigade Grandet of Desfourneaux’s division; the adjudant-commandant Desplanques, whom he appointed general of brigade; General Salm of Hardy’s division; and, of Rochambeau’s division, General of brigade Brunet, the adjudants-commandants Lavalette and Andrieux, and the chef de brigade Rey, colonel of the 5th light. In a campaign of less than ten days, Toussaint’s army had been scattered and thrown back beyond the bridge of the Ester, toward the Artibonite.
