Acul de Léogane. Taken by Withloke; sixty English die when a young Black republican fires the magazine.

So as not to leave his troops idle, he resolved to attack the Acul, a stronghold held by the republicans and situated one league from Léogane. He landed at that town at the head of his division, composed of the 13th, 20th, 49th and 62nd European regiments. He marched against the Acul on 19 February with two five-and-a-half-inch howitzers and two four-pounders. Seconded by the courage of the Baron de Montalembert, Colonel Spencer and Captain Vincent, he carried the position from the republicans after a fight of 3 hours. The picked companies of the 49th and the light infantry of the royal guard and of the 13th fought with ardor. The English lost sixty soldiers in the explosion of the fort’s powder magazine, which a young Black republican had set on fire. They lost besides Captain Mershead of the 20th, Lieutenant Caulfieds of the 62nd, and Lieutenant Kerras of the engineers.
