During this interval the civil commissioner Saint-Léger, sent into the West by his colleagues, landed at Port-au-Prince on 29 January. He made vain efforts to restore peace between the whites and the confederation of the Croix-des-Bouquets. He was no more fortunate in the negotiation he undertook to bring back harmony between the whites and the mulattoes of Jacmel.
