This revolution, accomplished on 5 March 1791, completely overthrew the royalist party in the provinces of the West and the South; and the lower class of whites took power in the town of Port-au-Prince, which was to groan under its brigandage and its furies. That class would rule alone, would persecute the rich, and would refuse all contact with the men of color, who would make their rights respected only with arms in their hands.
