LETTER from the Minister to the Administrators, on the subordination of Free People toward White people

Haitian

I am sending you several copies of a Decree of the Conseil Supérieur of the Isle de France, of 18 August 1777, which condemns a free nègre to be hanged for insults and premeditated assault on the person of M. Foucault. As it is necessary to keep free and enslaved nègres in subordination, the intention of His Majesty is that this Decree be made public in Saint-Domingue; you will please give the necessary orders to that effect, and report back to me.

This Decree was published and posted in the Colony.
