LETTER from the Intendant to the Officers of the Jurisdiction of the Cap, concerning the insertion in the Gazette of the notice of marrons, and of persons deceased

Haitian

I HAVE consented, Messieurs, to the establishment of a Gazette in this Town, because I thought it could only be advantageous to the Colony. I do not wish to leave imperfect the fruit that can be expected from it. It has come to me from several places that it was wished that marrons be announced in this weekly sheet; it suffices that this makes the matter of a useful article for me to decide with pleasure to permit that they be inserted in it henceforth; it would therefore be a question of having sent, by every Courier, to the sieur Monceaux, Author of the Gazette, a list of the marrons who shall be found in the prisons of each Jurisdiction. I beg you, Messieurs, as concerns yours, to order the Jailer to address each week to the sieur Monceaux, under a simple cover, a statement of the marrons, signed by him, in which he shall take care to specify, as far as possible, the name, the nation, the brand, and the apparent age of each nègre, so that, on the various indications, the enslavers may be in a position to recognize them.
