Law opens Petit-Goâve to foreign trade
The establishment of this town goes back to 1663. After having been of great importance in the old colony, since it had been proposed to be its capital, it declined from the moment when the town of Port au-Prince began to be established. The safety of its harbor, placed on an excellent bay where ships can find a safe anchorage, sheltered from the winds by the islets à Poule and du Carénage, and its production of coffee and logwood contributed powerfully to its opening to foreign commerce by the law of 8 November 1876. For some time, under the French colony, preference was given to the bourg of the Acul de Petit-Goâve, where the establishment of the town of Fort-Royal was projected, which would be linked by a canal to the Etang de Miragoâne.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PETIT-GOAVE (le).
