Joseph Nerette, the judge the army made president after the 1991 coup, is born

Joseph Nerette was born in Port-au-Prince on 9 April 1924. He was a jurist and a judge of the Cour de Cassation. On 7 October 1991, a week after soldiers overthrew Jean-Bertrand Aristide and drove him into exile, the army and parliament installed Nerette as provisional president. He held the office while the OAS embargo tightened and thousands fled by boat, and while the Cour de Cassation struck down the Washington accord in March 1992. He gave up the post in June 1992. He died of cancer in Port-au-Prince on 29 April 2007.
