Francois-Wolff Ligonde died on 8 April 2013, aged 85. He was named archbishop of Port-au-Prince on 20 August 1966 after long haggling between the Holy See and the Haitian government, and ordained bishop on 28 October that year. He was the first Haitian to hold the seat, which had been run by French clergy since the Concordat of 1860. He stayed in it for forty-two years and retired in 2008. He had recently had heart surgery and lived with diabetes.
