Jeannot is arrested and shot on Jean François’s order
Haitian
History. On 1 November 1791, Jean François, generalissimo of the rebel Blacks, on learning of the atrocities committed by Jeannot, his lieutenant, was horrified by them and ordered him to put an end to them. Jeannot’s troops, weary of his tyranny, abandoned him. Jean François had him arrested and condemned him to death. Jeannot behaved basely at the moment of dying. He begged the priest of la Marmelade, who was attending him, to ask Jean François for his pardon. He clung to the priest with such force that he nearly strangled him, and it was necessary to shoot him at point-blank range.
Rouzier tells this under the entry VALLIÈRE.
