James Theodore Holly is born, future first Episcopal bishop of Haiti

James Theodore Augustus Holly was born in Washington, D.C. on 3 October 1829. He argued that Black Americans should build a nation of their own, and in 1861 he led 110 African American and Canadian emigrants to Haiti. President Geffrard granted him Haitian citizenship on 13 June 1861. In 1874 he was consecrated missionary bishop of Haiti — the first African American bishop in the Protestant Episcopal Church. He died in Port-au-Prince on 13 March 1911 and is buried there.
