Jacmel evacuated; part of the garrison rallies at Gaste

At the evacuation of Jacmel, on 12 March 1800, a part of the garrison, lost in the woods, reached the habitation Gaste, where it rallied. It was only at this place that Gauthier realized that Pétion’s column had not followed him. He believed it annihilated. Gauthier could not remain long on the habitation Gaste, the bands of the mountain under the orders of Pierre Conil and Michel Selles having come to assail him. He left it and reached the habitation Bénard with his legionaries, driving before him the armed mountaineers.
