Insurgents assail the Cap again
Haitian
On the following 28 October the Cap was again assailed by the insurgent indigènes. General Leclerc, on his deathbed, sent the order to General Clausel to occupy only the enclosure of the town in order to defend himself better. The indigènes were camped less than a lieue from the gates of the town. On 1 November Leclerc died of yellow fever at the Cap, at one o’clock in the morning, and designated General Rochambeau to succeed him. Pauline Bonaparte had the body of her husband embalmed; after receiving funeral honors, it was embarked for France on the ship the Swiftsure, on which she accompanied it. The Panthéon received the mortal remains of Captain General Leclerc.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Cap-haïtien (le).
