Dessalines takes the Gonaïves from the French
Haitian
On 23 October 1802, Dessalines, after seizing the Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite and raising the standard of revolt against the French in the Artibonite, rallied Pétion, Christophe and Clervaux at the habitation Georges, near the Gonaïves, and marched against that town with the 4th colonial half-brigade. After two assaults, the town was evacuated by the French. Huin and Lux entrenched themselves at Fort Mouneau, and embarked with the 5th light half-brigade for the Port-Républicain, after having cannonaded the town. General Gabart had the honors of the day.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonaïves (les).
