Indians take refuge on La Gonâve after the massacre of Anacaona’s court
Haitian
History. The Gonâve served as a refuge for the Indians at the time of the massacre of the court of Queen Anacaona of Léogane, on the order of Ovando, in 1503. The Indians called this island Guanabo or Guanavana (soursop), whence Gonâve was made.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonâve (la).
