Hurricane sweeps away the wooden bridge at Paparita
Haitian
OZAMA ( l’ ). River at whose mouth the city of Santo-Domingo is established. For small vessels it is navigable up to 35 kilometers from the sea, which facilitates transport; but large ships could ascend it as far as 4 kilometers, where its depth is 7.5 meters. At the mouth there is a bar formed by the sand that it carries; it has at that spot only 11 to 12 feet of water. Its banks are steep, and fall away to the north of Santo Domingo to 1 meter. It rarely overflows its bed. At the hurricane of 6 September 1883 its waters gathered so violently that the wooden bridge joining the city to Paparita was carried away.
Rouzier tells this under the entry OZAMA ( l’ ).
