Hurricane damages Cayes de Jacmel

Haitian

The village is situated 4 lieues from the town of Jacmel. Several hurricanes wrought damage there, notably those of 24 July 1724, 21 September 1751, 16 September 1754, 5 September 1781, 26 August 1785 and 16 August 1788. On its territory some vestiges of the settlements of the Indians have been found, which have led to the presumption that a numerous population originally inhabited this canton. Traces of two gold mines indicate that they were worked by the Spaniards: copper and iron ore abound there, and spar and quartz show at the surface of the ground.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Cayes de Jacmel (les).
