Hurricane Cleo crosses the southwest peninsula and flattens Les Cayes

Haitian

Hurricane Cleo passed south of Haiti on 24 August 1964 and turned north onto the southwestern peninsula. It had peaked near 150 mph the day before. The mountains tore its circulation apart, but not before it levelled Les Cayes; the surge and the flooding killed well over a hundred people across the southwest. The carrier USS Boxer reached Hispaniola with medical aid on the 29th.
