Haiti adopts the constitution that will carry Salomon through his presidency

Haitian

On 18 December 1879 the National Assembly adopted a new constitution, replacing the charter of 1867. It set the presidential term at seven years and made it non-renewable, though a revision in June 1886 let Lysius Salomon, elected president on 23 October 1879, seek a second term anyway. The text was revised eight times between 1880 and 1886. It lasted until the civil war of 1888.
