Guillemet and Clausel retake Fort-Liberté from Toussaint Brave

Haitian

On 1 December of the same year, at two o’clock in the afternoon, the ship’s Captain Guillemet moored broadside before the town and bombarded it. At the same time General Clausel reached the shore. Toussaint Brave held the place, in insurrection against the French. The latter drove him from Fort Saint-Joseph. In evacuating the town, the indigènes set fire to it and spiked twenty-five pieces of cannon. Clausel stopped the fire, which consumed only five houses. General Lavalette displayed great intrepidity in this affair. Rochambeau, then captain general after the death of Leclerc, rejoiced greatly at this success. He sent the officials of Fort-Liberté back to resume their posts, which they had abandoned during the insurrection.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Fort-Liberté.
