General Romain takes Fort Belair by surprise and then breaks through a French column
Haitian
On 19 February 1803 General Romain took the fort Belair from the French by surprise: the European troops who were guarding it were put to the sword. The French General Thouvenot set up, from the town against the fort, a battery of eight cannon and a howitzer: the cannonballs, bombs and shells forced the indigènes, in less than half an hour, to abandon the fort Belair; behind the fort they met a French column that cut off their retreat. A bloody fight began, and General Romain passed over the body of the French column.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Belair.
