General Louis-Jacques Beauvais drowns at sea during the War of Knives

Louis-Jacques Beauvais was born free at Croix-des-Bouquets in 1759. He was one of the ablest officers among the free men of color, commanding in the South and West through the wars against the British and the planters. When the War of Knives split Toussaint Louverture and Andre Rigaud, Beauvais tried to stay out of it and sailed for France. His ship went down on 12 September 1799 and he drowned with it. He never saw the country he had fought a decade to make.
