Dany Toussaint, army major turned senator and power broker, is born

Dany Toussaint was born on 12 September 1957. He rose to major in the Haitian Army, then commanded the police and served as bodyguard to Jean-Bertrand Aristide after the 1994 restoration. He broke with Lavalas, won a Senate seat, and led the Haitian Democratic and Reformist Movement. He ran for president in February 2006 and lost. He died on 15 September 2021, three days after his sixty-fourth birthday.
