Freedmen under Beauvais fight the whites; Praloto burns the city
Haitian
On 21 November 1791, there was a battle between the affranchis commanded by Beauvais and the whites: they had fought from 2 o’clock in the afternoon until evening. Praloto set fire to the town. The hommes de couleur who had remained neutral were slaughtered in the streets with their wives. The stores were pillaged. 27 blocks out of 30, and 500 houses, were burned: the losses rose to 50 million livres tournois. The town was encircled by the affranchis, who diverted the waters of Turgeau and of Martissant. Provisions could not reach it and famine there became horrible.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
