Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Étienne d’Argent was born at Ravine Sèche, in the Artibonite, on 12 April 1936. He grew up poor and without knowing his father. He became a teacher, a singer, an actor, a dramatist and a painter as well as the novelist who wrote Dézafi, the first modern novel in Haitian Kreyòl. He took the Prix Carbet in 2002.
