France orders Toussaint locked in the château of Brest and his family scattered

On 24 July 1802 the Minister of the Marine instructed the maritime prefect at Brest that Toussaint Louverture was to be shut in the château there and kept under good guard, with one servant. The same order dispersed his family: his son Placide was to be sent to Belle-Île-en-Mer and handed to the commandant; his wife, his two older children, his two nieces and their servant were to go by sea to Bayonne and be kept under the eye of the municipal administration. Breaking the family into pieces and scattering them across France was policy, written down.
