Fire at the habitation Chabaud begins the general insurrection
HISTORY. At the time of the general insurrection of the enslaved in 1791, Governor de Blanchelande sent Colonel Thouzard from the Cap at the head of a regiment to retake Limbé from them. Thouzard, hearing the noise of the cannon in the direction of the Cap, turned back and forced Jeannot, who was besieging that town, to abandon his prey. The insurrection had begun with the burning of the Chabaud habitation, which took place on 11 August. Before that time Limbé was the theater of the misdeeds of the African Macandal, whose name had become a term used to describe any individual who busies himself with duping the credulous by the use of fetishes and spells. Macandal used poison to bring about death. He long wandered in the woods. At last he was arrested, condemned and burned alive in 1758 in the town of the Cap Haitien.
Rouzier tells this under the entry LIMBE.
