Earthquake strikes Cap-haïtien

Haitian

Earthquakes are fairly frequent there. This redoubtable phenomenon caused the city of the Conception de la Vega to disappear in 1564, and made itself felt most particularly at Port-au-Prince, which was destroyed in 1770, at the Cap-haïtien on 7 May 1842, and at the Môle Saint-Nicolas on 23 September 1887. Shocks occur very frequently, but with much less intensity; they are preceded by a dull noise called gouffre, which is often heard without the earth trembling, and which is produced by a cause hitherto unknown. Some of the roadsteads of Haiti are affected, in the rainy season, by tidal surges that destroy ships.

Rouzier tells this under the entry HAÏTI: the general article.
