Earthquake destroys old Compostela
Haitian
Azua de Compostela. This city, situated on the right bank of the Via in the Dominican Republic, on the road from Saint-Jean and that from Neybe to Santo-Domingo, nearly two lieues from the shore of the bay of Ocoa, replaced the ancient city of Compostelle, founded in 1504 by Diego Columbus, and which was overthrown by the earthquake of 18 October 1751. This terrible event having brought the sea into the city, it was abandoned, and the present city was then founded 10 kilometers inland.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Azua de Compostela.
