E. Nau reports on the coal of Las Guanas
LAS GUANAS. Property of the Basquiat heirs at Hinche. Abundant coal, rich in bitumen, in the Savane à pierres. The river Canon, starting point of the guayamunco, principal tributary of the Artibonite, bounds it. The coal seam is in certain places 8 to 10 feet thick. (Report of 10 September 1860 by Mr. E. Nau in the Moniteur of 22 September.) It occupies the vast extent lying between Hinche and Billigny, and between Lasguamas and St Michel. The outcrops of this basin form the bottom of three dams in a stair, fed by the waters of the Ravine aux-sables, one of the tributaries of the Canon. This basin belongs in part to the Basquiat heirs, and gives great value to this property and to all those that adjoin it. Mahogany wood.
Rouzier tells this under the entry LAS GUANAS.
