Dumarsais Estime dies in exile in New York

Dumarsais Estime was born at Verrettes on 21 April 1900 and sat sixteen years in parliament before becoming president on 16 August 1946. He was the president of 1946, the black middle class in power after Lescot. He built schools, expanded Belladere on the Dominican border, protected workers, and staged the 1949 Bicentennial Exposition for Port-au-Prince. When he tried to change the constitution to keep himself in office the army removed him on 10 May 1950 and put him on a boat ten days later. He died in New York on 20 July 1953. Paul Magloire, one of the officers who overthrew him, brought the body home and gave him a state funeral.
