Dessalines’s soldiers attack the pharmacist Saladin

Haitian

A white pharmacist, Saladin, living on the Place Vallière, assailed in his dwelling on 16 March 1804 by soldiers of Dessalines who had come to cut his throat, was vigorously defended by his son, a young man of color, a soldier of the 4th indigène. Saladin poisoned himself at the moment when the door of the room in which he was shut up was about to be broken in. The iron market of the Place Vallière, built by Mr A. Bobo by order of the government of President Hippolyte, was inaugurated on Sunday 22 October 1891. It cost 135,000 dollars in gold.

Rouzier tells this under the entry PLACE VALLIERE (la).
