Dessalines reaches Trémé and faces Rigaud’s 700 men

Haitian

Dessalines, not giving the enemy time to catch his breath, ordered a division of 8000 men to go and seize the heights of Trémé. Clervaux could take possession of them only after a most bloody combat. Dessalines, who was advancing in two columns, reached it on 5 July. From Dufrété he discovered the troops of the South drawn up in the plain that stretched at his feet. They numbered 700 men commanded by General Rigaud in person. Dessalines descended the mornes with the right-hand column, while Clervaux, guided through woods and ravines by Gils Bambara, a mountain man of Petit Goâve, strove to turn the enemy.

Rouzier tells this under the entry TRÉMÉ ou DUFRÉTEY.
