Dessalines inspects his lines under fire at the siege of Santo Domingo
Haitian
On 8 March 1805, during the siege of Santo Domingo, Dessalines, amid the grapeshot that the guns of the ramparts vomited forth, went over all the positions occupied by his army. When he came opposite the bastion of the Conception, he stopped to examine it. General Ferrand, inside the town, was standing on the bastion in the midst of his staff. He ordered the artillery Captain Basquet to aim a 6-pounder culverin at the group of indigenous officers where Dessalines stood. The shot went off, and Adjutant General Damestois, one of our brave soldiers, was knocked down by the cannonball beside the Emperor. Dessalines continued to inspect his lines and returned to his headquarters.
Rouzier tells this under the entry CONCEPTION.
