Dessalines attacks Fort Bellevue with 20,000 men

Haitian

The fort of Bellevue was commanded by Tessier and Renaud Desruisseaux; it was armed with only one piece of 24 and two pieces of 8. On 22 October, after several months stationed before this fort, Dessalines attacked it with 20,000 men. Tessier withstood his onslaught with courage at the head of 800 men, despite the cannonade of the warships. He was carried off by a cannonball. One of the pieces of 8 of fort Bellevue was dismounted by a ball of 14. The garrison, deprived of provisions and heavily decimated, evacuated the fort in the night of 23 to 24 October and withdrew to Grand-Goâve, after having buried its two cannons. General Clervaux took position there for Toussaint-Louverture and remained there until after the evacuation of Jacmel. On 28 April, he set out marching on Grand-Goâve.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Bellevue.
