Derenoncourt blows up the Constitution

Haitian

VALLEE (la). A small port near Jean-Rabel. On 2 February 1808, Derenoncourt was going aboard the schooner “Constitution” to the relief of the “Présidente”, held in the port of la Vallée, when he encountered a brig and two schooners of the North. An unequal combat began at once between them. After resisting these three vessels that surrounded his own, and seeing himself on the point of being taken, Derenoncourt set fire to his powder and blew up the “Constitution.”

Rouzier tells this under the entry VALLEE (la).
