Cry of ‘Down with Salomon’; General Pénor Benjamin killed; Salomon has the city pillaged and burned
Haitian
On 22 September 1883, during the insurrection of Miragoâne, Jacmel and Jérémie, some scatterbrained young men went out into the street in Port-au-Prince and shouted: Down with Salomon! They fired in the air and went to the arrondissement headquarters, where they killed the commander, General Pénor Benjamin, and escaped to the consulates. Salomon had the finest quartiers of the city pillaged and burned. It was a Saturday. The next day, when everything was believed to be over, the pillage and the fire began again. It took an ultimatum from the foreign consuls to bring these scenes of savagery to an end.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-AU PRINCE [le].
