Constitutional law restores the 1846 charter after Soulouque’s empire

Faustin Soulouque had made himself emperor in 1849. On 23 December 1858 the Committee of Gonaives abolished the imperial regime and proclaimed the Republic restored, putting the Constitution of 1846 back in force. On 18 July 1859 a constitutional law made that legal, amending articles 62, 71, 111, 132, 133, 137, 167, 182, 192 and 193 of the charter. Fabre Geffrard was now president. Haiti had changed its constitution again, as it had done and would do dozens of times, each new charter written by whoever had just won.
