Clément Jumelle dies in the Cuban embassy and the army steals his body

Clément Jumelle ran for president in the election of 22 September 1957, then withdrew accusing the army of favoritism. After François Duvalier won, Jumelle went into hiding. Two years later he took refuge in the Cuban embassy in Port-au-Prince, and there he died on 11 April 1959. The next day soldiers under Major Jean Beauvoir came to the wake at the home of his brother, Dr. Gaston Jumelle, and took the corpse during the funeral procession. The most macabre rumors ran about what was done with it. Le Nouvelliste reported the theft on 13 April 1959 and never wrote about it again.
