Captain Laporte scuttles his barge and kills himself
Haitian
On 18 May 1803, Captain Laporte, commanding a barge of the Haitian flotilla, pursued in the gulf of the Gonâve by a French cruiser, stove in his boat rather than surrender, and blew out his brains. The entire crew was swallowed up.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Gonâve (la).
