Capoix takes Port-de-Paix with 1,000 cultivators
Haitian
On 7 October 1802 Capoix, at the head of 1,000 cultivators whom he had raised against the French, took Port-de-Paix from the battalion chief Eschenaux. The whole white population capable of bearing arms was exterminated. The garrison fled to the Cap by sea under the orders of the battalion chief Angaut. Capoix showed himself during this war so inexorable toward the Europeans who fell into his power that the French nicknamed him Capois-la-Mort. White women and children alone found mercy before him.
Rouzier tells this under the entry PORT-DE-PAIX.
