c. AD 600 – 1200: Stable isotope analysis of human remains from several sites in Puerto Rico has provided a more nuanced view of indigenous mobility and diet. Research by G.R. DuChemin and others suggests that while many individuals spent their entire lives within a single river valley, a significant minority were “non-locals” who moved between the coast and the interior. This internal migration likely facilitated the exchange of goods and information, contributing to the social integration of the island. The data also confirms a diverse diet that balanced terrestrial proteins like Isolobodon portoricensis (hutia) with a wide array of marine fish and horticultural products.
