c. AD 1000 – 1500: In Barbados, Post-Saladoid society underwent significant social changes characterized by shifts in settlement patterns and material culture. Research by P.L. Drewett suggests that these communities adapted to the unique coral limestone environment of the island, which lacked the volcanic resources found elsewhere in the Lesser Antilles. Despite this isolation, the archaeological record shows continued participation in regional exchange networks. The development of distinct local styles alongside imported goods illustrates the balance between island autonomy and Caribbean connectivity. These findings help define the specific cultural trajectory of Barbados within the broader Late Ceramic Age.
