c. 270 BC: Excavations at the Corinthia III site in Cuba have identified some of the earliest known examples of Archaic Age pottery. This discovery is significant because it suggests that ceramic technology was being utilized by indigenous groups long before the arrival of the more well-known “Ceramic Age” migrations. The presence of these vessels indicates a period of experimentation with clay and more sedentary lifestyles during the Late Archaic. These early ceramic traditions highlight the diversity of material culture across the archipelago. Such evidence forces a reevaluation of the rigid boundaries between established archaeological “ages” in the Caribbean.
