c. 4000 BC: Archaeological evidence from the Barrera-Mordan site in the Dominican Republic highlights the early presence of specialized stone-working groups in the Greater Antilles. These “Archaic Age” inhabitants are characterized by their unique flaked-stone and ground-stone tool complexes. Such sites demonstrate that indigenous groups had established structured settlements and environmental adaptations far earlier than traditionally suggested. The study of these lithic technologies is essential for mapping the initial migration routes into the northern islands. These findings challenge the older view of the Caribbean as a late-settled region.
