British warships shell Cap-Haïtien and break Salnave’s hold on the city

On 9 November 1865 HMS Galatea and HMS Lily bombarded the forts guarding the harbour at Cap-Haïtien and landed government troops. The raid answered a rebel attack on the British consulate and the loss of HMS Bulldog on 23 October. Sylvain Salnave had held the city through a six-month siege by Geffrard. Geffrard’s troops stormed in during the confusion and Salnave fled aboard the USS De Soto, ordering the city burned. Roughly half of Cap-Haïtien was destroyed.
