British squadron destroys the French fort at Saint-Louis-du-Sud

On 22 March 1748 a British squadron under Admiral Charles Knowles attacked Saint-Louis-du-Sud on the southern coast of Saint-Domingue. Nine ships of the line and two sloops came against a garrison of 310 men. The fort was destroyed. The French lost about 160 killed or wounded, 150 taken prisoner and four ships; the British counted 20 dead and 50 wounded. Saint-Domingue was then the richest colony on earth, and it was rich because of the sugar enslaved Africans cut in that heat — which is why Europe kept sending fleets to fight over it.
