British squadron destroys the French fort at Saint-Louis-du-Sud

On 22 March 1748 a British squadron under Admiral Charles Knowles attacked Saint-Louis-du-Sud on the southern coast of Saint-Domingue. Nine ships of the line and two sloops came against a garrison of 310 men. The fort was destroyed. The French lost about 160 killed or wounded, 150 taken prisoner and four ships; the British counted 20 dead and 50 wounded. Saint-Domingue was then the richest colony on earth, and it was rich because of the sugar enslaved Africans cut in that heat, which is why Europe kept sending fleets to fight over it.
