Bayyinah Bello, historian of the revolution’s women, is born

Bayyinah Bello was born on 25 March 1948. She studied in France and the United States, then went to the African continent and stayed fifteen years, four of them in Nigeria, where she took a master’s degree in linguistics, with time in Benin and Togo as well. She came home to teach history at the Universite d’Etat d’Haiti. She founded the Fondasyon Marie-Claire Heureuse Felicite Bonheur Dessalines, known as Fondasyon Felicite, to dig out the women the textbooks dropped. Her book Sheroes of the Haitian Revolution puts their names back on the page.
