Albert Mangones, who sculpted Neg Mawon, is born in Port-au-Prince

Albert Mangones was born in Port-au-Prince on 26 March 1917. He went to Belgium to study agronomy and came out of the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts an architect instead, then worked in the United States and Mexico before coming home. On 22 September 1967 his bronze was unveiled on the Champ de Mars: a kneeling man, a broken chain still on his ankle, a machete in one hand, a conch at his lips. Haitians call it Neg Mawon. It has become the country’s plainest statement about itself. Mangones died in Port-au-Prince on 25 April 2002.
