Antoine Simon driven from the presidency by a revolt out of the North

Francois C. Antoine Simon lost the presidency on 2 August 1911, brought down by insurgents coming out of the North. He had held power since December 1908. Two days later he boarded a Dutch packet steamer for Jamaica. The same day Antenor Firmin, whose partisans had helped push Simon out and who still hoped for the palace, sailed on the French packet La Caravelle for Cap-Haitien by way of Santo Domingo. Cincinnatus Leconte entered Port-au-Prince on 6 August and had the National Assembly elect him president on 15 August. It was under Simon that the mass exodus of Haitian peasants to Cuba and the Dominican Republic began.
